Lop rabbits are defined by their unique ear carriage. The additional weight of longer or thicker ears that canβt be fully supported by the structure cause ears that droop, hence the term 'lop'.
The opening of the ear faces the skull, and due to a raised cartilaginous ear base, the head of many lop rabbit breeds (excluding English Lops) has a small bulge, known as the crown. The head of a typical lop rabbit is said to resemble that of a male sheep, resulting in the German term for a lop rabbit being Widder, meaning Aries, or the ram. The same goes for many other languages including French (bΓ©lier β ram) and Italian (ariete β aries).Scientists and Historians continue to argue on the origins of lop rabbits, though there is a general agreement that English Lops were one of the first lop eared breeds to be developed by humans in the 19th century.
Despite the majority of rabbit breeds having erect ears, lop-eared breeds still make up around 15% of all ARBA and BRC recognised breeds.Such breeds include:
American Fuzzy Lop
Cashmere Lop
Canadian Plush Lop
Dwarf Lop
English Lop
German Lop
Holland Lop
Meissner Lop
Mini Lion Lop
Mini Lop
Miniature Lop
Velveteen Lop

Not to be confused with the Miniature Lop, the Mini Lop is a breed of domestic rabbit that became recognised by ARBA in 1980.
The mini lop rabbit is small, but may be larger than Holland lops. Adults weigh about 4.5 to 6.5 pounds.

The Velveteen Lop breed was developed in the 1980s, with the goal of creating a rabbit with a semi-arched body shape and fur similar to that of the Mini Rex. The breed is named after the children's story βThe Velveteen Rabbitβ.

When it was realized that French Lops were over-sized and Netherland Dwarfs were under-sized, people decided to breed the two together in hopes that their offspring will inherit the optimal size, creating the Holland Lop.
Lops are the pugs or bulldogs of rabbit breeds. They were bred for a βcuterβ look along with unnatural drooped ears, leading to higher health risks like most animals bred for the same purpose.Due to the shape of their skulls, respiratory infections, blocked tear ducts, and dental disease are just a few examples of the health issues lop rabbits are prone to.The biggest concern, however, is ear infections β itβs almost a given that they will experience one at some point in their life.
Narrowed ear canals, excess wax build up, and ear pain are expected.
